Purchasing a Home for My Family
One family goal I am especially proud of is purchasing a home for my family, something that felt incredibly rewarding after years of hard work. Growing up in a family-owned business, I understood the value of dedication and perseverance. My father taught me early on about the importance of responsibility, and that carried over into every aspect of my life. As I built Ponce Tree Services, I was committed to growing a stable business, not just for me but for my loved ones. It took years of building strong customer relationships, ensuring top-notch service, and carefully managing finances, but all of this helped create the stability needed to achieve this milestone. Owning our home wasn't just about having a place to live but also about giving my family a sense of security and a long-term investment for our future.
What made this achievement even more special is how it ties back to the lessons I learned from both my father and my experience as a certified arborist. The discipline from soccer, the training I received at Southern Methodist University, and the skills I've developed running a business all played a part. Just as we care for and nurture trees in our service, I applied the same approach to personal goals. With patience, strategy, and dedication, we created something that will last for generations. This accomplishment is a direct reflection of the work ethic and values instilled in me, and it's something I take immense pride in.
Helping My Daughter Recover
One family goal I'm particularly proud of is helping my daughter regain her confidence and strength after a serious ankle injury she suffered during netball. With over 30 years of experience in physiotherapy and sports rehabilitation, I knew exactly how to guide her through the recovery process in a way that would also address her unique needs as a young athlete. We took it step by step, first focusing on gentle mobility and strength exercises to restore her range of motion and build the foundation for more intense training. As her confidence grew, we transitioned into advanced stability and sports-specific drills, which were crucial for her returning to the court with agility and confidence.
This journey was incredibly special because it allowed me to support my daughter on both a personal and professional level, something not everyone has the chance to do. Watching her get back into her sport, stronger and more determined than ever, was rewarding not only as a father but as a physiotherapist. Her recovery journey was a powerful reminder of why I'm so passionate about what I do; seeing someone return to what they love and reach new physical potential is deeply fulfilling. The knowledge and skills I've honed over the years allowed me to carefully tailor her rehabilitation to her specific needs, ensuring she could safely and confidently step back into her sport.
Traveling Full-Time with Family
One family goal we accomplished that I'm most proud of is our decision to spend more time together, particularly after the COVID lockdown. In a pivotal moment, we chose to quit our jobs and travel full-time for a year with our kids, who were just 6 and 8 at the time.
This journey transformed our lives in ways we never anticipated. While it wasn't always easy—there were challenges along the way—every experience brought us closer together. We explored new cultures, visited breathtaking landscapes, and created unforgettable memories. Most importantly, we witnessed our kids grow and flourish, developing their own identities and perspectives. This adventure taught us the value of connection and resilience, and it solidified our belief that family bonds are strengthened through shared experiences. This journey became our new normal, and it was so special to see our family thrive in ways we had only dreamed of.
Transforming My Mother's Garden
One family goal I'm particularly proud of is transforming my mother's garden into a space that genuinely felt like a sanctuary for her. Growing up, I spent countless hours with her, learning the basics of plant care and garden maintenance, which laid the foundation for my career. Years later, when I had the skills and experience as a certified horticulturist, I decided to give back by taking her garden to the next level. I used everything I'd learned over my 15 years in the industry, from selecting plants suited to the soil type and climate to creating a balanced layout that not only looked beautiful but was sustainable with minimal upkeep. I wanted to create something that didn't just look nice but had real, lasting value for her. This project was about more than aesthetics; it was about creating a space that would give her joy, peace, and a connection to nature, especially as she aged.
What made it so special was watching how much the garden enriched her daily life. I designed areas that would flower across different seasons, ensuring there was always something in bloom to lift her spirits. The pathways and plant beds were arranged to make moving around easier and safer for her, and I included fragrant plants like lavender and rosemary, which filled the space with calming scents. My horticulture training and experience in designing practical yet beautiful gardens truly came into play here. I could consider all the details, from soil health to plant longevity and ease of maintenance, so that the garden remained lush without becoming a chore. Seeing how much joy and peace it brings her has been deeply rewarding and reminds me of why I started this journey in the first place.
