4 Family Goals Focused On Giving Back to the Community

One family goal that's deeply rooted in our values is dedicating time each quarter to give back through skills-based volunteering. We've made it a point as a family to identify organizations—often local nonprofits or youth programs—that could benefit from what we're uniquely equipped to offer, whether that's digital strategy, design help, or mentoring.

We chose this path because we wanted to teach our kids that giving back isn't just about donations; it's about using what you know to empower others. I run a tech company, so naturally my instinct is to build or solve. But when we get involved as a family, it's not just me jumping into consultant mode—it becomes an opportunity for us to collaborate, whether that's my spouse helping organize a workshop or our kids assisting with logistics or even basic design work. They get to see firsthand how their contributions matter, even in small ways.

One project that really made an impact on us involved helping a community literacy nonprofit build out their first-ever digital resource hub. It was a weekend effort that turned into a longer partnership, and it brought us closer together. Not only did we grow more aware of needs right in our own city, but we also had richer conversations at the dinner table—conversations about privilege, purpose, and how we define success.

It's easy to let work dominate your identity, especially as a founder. But integrating community work into our family rhythm keeps us grounded. It reminds us that no matter how busy we get, there's always time to lift others up—and that doing it together makes the experience that much more meaningful. This goal doesn't just shape how we spend our time; it shapes how we see our place in the world.

One family goal that we've stuck to over the years is using our roofing business to give back—specifically by donating roof repairs or maintenance work to elderly homeowners or single parents in the Houston area who genuinely can't afford it. We try to do this at least once or twice a year, and I involve my family in the entire process, from vetting the stories to showing up on-site when we do the work.

This isn't a marketing stunt. It's personal. I come from a family that knows what it's like to live on a tight budget and still try to keep a roof over your head—literally. So when I see someone struggling with leaks or unsafe conditions and no way to fix it, I can't just look the other way.

Involving my family in this goal keeps us grounded. My kids are learning early on that business isn't just about profit—it's about people. They've helped deliver materials, sat in the truck while we did emergency patch jobs, and listened to the homeowners' stories. It's given them a sense of purpose and a deeper understanding of what hard work really means.

It's also impacted how we run Achilles Roofing and Exterior. My crew knows that when we take on one of these community jobs, it's not about the money—it's about stepping up as neighbors. And they show up every time, no questions asked.

Giving back this way has become part of our identity, both as a family and as a business. It reminds us why we do what we do. We're not just fixing shingles—we're keeping people safe, dry, and dignified. And that's something I want my kids to carry with them long after I'm off the roof.

One family goal we've committed to is organizing a community clean-up day at least twice a year. It started as a small effort—just the few of us picking up litter in a nearby park—but it's grown into something we invite neighbors, friends, and even coworkers to join. We rotate locations, sometimes focusing on green spaces, sometimes helping local shelters with supplies or time.

The impact on our family has been surprisingly deep. It's become a way to teach values like responsibility, empathy, and consistency—without having to "teach" in a traditional way. It's hands-on, it's collaborative, and it gives us a shared sense of purpose that extends beyond our day-to-day lives. It also strengthens our bond because we're working as a team toward something meaningful, and that feeling lingers long after the event is over.

Give with a plan, not vibes.

Our family goal: 5% of income and one Saturday a month to a local need. Each quarter the kids pick the cause, we visit, donate, and do the work.

Impact: less entitlement, more gratitude. We plan together, show up together, debrief together. It turns "family" into a team with a mission.
